Restating ‘Location’ is an essay that was published by Basic Space Press in conjunction with Basic Space’s 2012/2013 residency at the Irish Museum of Modern Art. The text acts as an introduction to the publication and thinks through the notion of artwork that may be viewed without requiring the physical convergence of an audience in a space. The philosophy of structuralism is used here as a point of access through which the subject of immaterial dissemination may be negotiated. Enquiring into the problems that arise from the emerging ‘subjunctive’ state of immaterial art, the text considers how subjectivities that arise from the detachment of work from the guiding force of the institution lead to work that relies, for its semantic functioning, on the viewer’s rewriting of the object.
